It's been 15 years since the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner went on the market. While it's been a very successful model, it's time for the sixth generation to take center stage. Releasing later this fall, the new generation 4Runner is sure to impress. There will be new engine options, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a TNGA-F frame and suspension architecture. Several elements are also borrowed from the Tacoma pickup, which allows for better performance and off-roading. To learn more about the new 4Runner, keep reading as we discuss this model.
Highlights of the New 4Runner
The new 4Runner is what many off-road enthusiasts have been waiting for. The updated SUV will have a TNGA-F frame and suspension, allowing for better performance on and off-road. Additionally, the new setup, which is borrowed from the Tacoma model, will have similar trim setups. For instance, the Trailhunter trim is optimized for overland and rocky terrain. Meanwhile, the TRD Pro trim is geared more toward desert excursions.
Though the similarities to the Tacoma don't stop there. The 4Runners' new exterior will have a front end inspired heavily by the pickup's design. Meanwhile, the interior will use the same buttons, instrument cluster, and a center stack as the Tacoma.
Even the 4Runners new powertrains are engines found in the Tacoma. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter i-Force inline-four-cylinder, producing 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Then there's the more powerful 2.4-liter i-Force Max 4Runner Hybrid with an electric that produces 278 hp. However, the hybrid setup can produce 326 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque with the right setup.
