The Toyota Prius was the first hybrid vehicle. While many other hybrids have come out since then, the Prius/Prius Prime continued to be popular. That's why, in 2004, it won the North American Car of the Year Award (NACTOY). Now, 20 years later, the Prius is again recognized thanks to its bold style and exceptional fuel economy.

What is the North American Car of the Year Award?

The NACTOY is an event co-hosted by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) and the Automotive Press Association (APA). Each year, this prestigious award is handed to the most outstanding new vehicles in their segments. A large panel of automotive journalists determines the winner by looking at over half a dozen criteria. Journalists from the United States and Canada look at innovation, design, safety, etc. The award is unique because no singular publication, website, radio, or television station determines the winner.

Why the Prius Won

While many factors helped the Prius/Prius Prime win, ultimately, two pushed it over the edge. Those were the model's appearance and fuel economy.

Matt DeLorenzo, a journalist judging the event, gave his thoughts. He said, "The Toyota Prius and Prius Prime are not just handsomely styled hatchbacks - they represent the future of the automobile." "Of particular note is the plug-in version, which offers more than 40 miles of pure electric range, allowing most owners to skip regular gas station visits."

After winning, Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Marketing, said, "The unique combination of sexy styling and industry-leading efficiency put Prius in a league all its own." He continued, "After nearly 25 years, Prius continues to leave its mark on the world…"

Toyota Wins Again

While the NACTOY is an impressive win, the Prius/Prime had many in the 23/24 award season. The model secured 16 accolades for a total of 17 wins. From its unique style to its outstanding fuel economy, the Prius once again proves why it's so popular.
