Toyota will soon join several auto manufacturers in offering a new Connected Vehicle (CV) system in upcoming cars. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) has worked with the US Department of Transportation in implementing the new app. The new upcoming CV system aims to help connect drivers on the road for their safety. The app keeps you alerted to impeding collision hazards and alert emergency services or other drivers as needed. This new CV pilot has undergone testing in Tampa Bay, FL, with plans of expanding it through the city. CV services may soon come available on new Toyota models at Palm Beach Toyota.

Staying Connected Wherever You Go

The new CV system uses an Onboard Unit OBU, which remains in the prototype phase. Using the data collected from these prototypes, Toyota monitored the accidents the system prevented. So far, the system has prevented over 14 wrong-way driving crashes and nine potential trolley crashes. CV technologies have also issued over 1,500-speed advisories to Tampa Bay drivers since its inception.

How it Works

THEA's CV works similar to the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite, as a new "vehicle-to-everything" (V2X) system. V2X means your Toyota will get connected to compatible infrastructure in your city. With V2X abilities, the CV system can keep you alert to traffic pattern changes, accidents, and important road information.
